The Historic Center of Cuenca has hundreds of heritage buildings, works of art, archaeological remains, and cultural manifestations that make up the identity of its people. For this reason, it has two heritage declarations. One as a Cultural Heritage of Ecuador in 1982, and also as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by UNESCO, in 1999.
These declarations were given to Cuenca for preserving the original grid of the Historic Center, since its foundation in 1557. Also, this Historic Center has not undergone changes in its original urban fabric for 400 years. On the other hand. The customs of its people were also taken into account, especially popular religiosity as “El Pase del Niño” which stands out as an intangible heritage. Moreover, the gastronomy and the way of being of Cuenca, among other aspects, are the characteristics that validated to get the title.
